Ukhrul: Residents of Ukhrul town on Monday evening held a solemn candlelight vigil to pay tribute to two civilians from the Tangkhul Naga community who were killed in a recent ambush at TM Kasom village.
The vigil, organised by Khanuithot–Khon, a Naga youth body, drew thousands of residents to the Ukhrul Community Circle (Gandhi Chowk) to honour the victims and express collective grief over the tragic incident.
Participants, including community leaders, youth groups, women’s organisations and church members, gathered in silence, holding candles and offering prayers for the departed.
According to organisers, the event was a powerful expression of unity, solidarity and remembrance for the victims—Late Chinaoshang Shokwungnao of Tashar village and Yaruingam Vashum of Kharasom—who were killed in the April 18 ambush at TM Kasom along NH-202. The attack has been attributed to suspected Kuki militants.
Community leaders condemned the killings, describing them as a brutal act that has deeply shaken the people of the district. They urged authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
Speaking at the event, Sword Vashum, President of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL), stressed the urgent need for unity among the people, underscoring the importance of collective decision-making and a clear vision for the future. He called on the community to remain steadfast and united in navigating the challenges ahead.
Social activist Ashang Kasar, in a more assertive address, emphasised the need for reform within society and institutions. He raised critical questions about current leadership, urging accountability and introspection.
Kasar also called for a determined and unwavering fight for the rights of the people, highlighting the importance of courage and principled action in the face of ongoing challenges.
The vigil stood as a symbol of solidarity and shared purpose, reflecting both grief and resolve, as the community called for justice and unity.
