The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested six Ukrainian nationals and one American citizen from Delhi, Kolkata and Lucknow over allegations of providing terrorist training to ethnic war groups in Myanmar.
A special NIA court at Patiala House on 16 March granted 11 days of custody to the seven foreign nationals, remanding them in NIA custody until 27 March.
According to officials, three Ukrainian nationals were arrested in Delhi, three in Lucknow, and one US citizen in Kolkata. The hearing was conducted in a closed courtroom by Additional Sessions Judge Prashant Sharma, who approved the remand. The NIA had sought 15 days of custody to continue its investigation.
Senior advocates Pramod Kumar Dubey and Atul Sehgal opposed the agency’s application for custodial remand on behalf of the accused.
The NIA has alleged that the individuals entered India on valid visas before moving illegally into Mizoram, a protected area that requires special permits for foreign nationals.
The agency further claims that the accused crossed into Myanmar, where they made contact with ethnic war groups linked to Indian insurgent organisations. According to the NIA, they were trained in Myanmar and were subsequently involved in training ethnic war groups associated with insurgent groups in India.
