Guwahati: A suspected member of the banned ULFA-I group was killed during an encounter with security forces in the Namsai district of Arunachal Pradesh.
As per reports, the incident took place in the 6 Mile area of Namsai, Arunachal Pradesh, where Assam Rifles engaged in a gun battle with suspected ULFA-I cadres. The group was allegedly linked to a previous attack on an army camp in nearby Tinsukia district, Assam, reported NDTV.
On the same day, security forces in cooperation with Arunachal Pradesh Police successfully defused an improvised explosive device (IED) near Nongtaw village in Namsai district. Authorities indicated the device was likely intended to target security forces ahead of Independence Day celebrations.
The banned ULFA-I group is reported to have active camps in Myanmar, focusing on extortion activities along the Assam–Arunachal Pradesh border. Recent arrests have exposed issues such as internal factionalism and morale challenges within the insurgent group.
According to statistics from the South Asia Terrorism Portal, there has been a decrease in ULFA-I related incidents and arrests since 2020. As of July 2025, a total of 20 ULFA-I cadres were arrested across nine different incidents this year.
