Imphal: In fresh violence reported from Manipur, an elderly farmer from Bishnupur district sustained a bullet injury following firing by suspected armed miscreants on Thursday afternoon.

The victim, identified as Ningthoujam Biren, was shot in the left forearm and is currently undergoing treatment at RIMS Hospital in Imphal.

The incident occurred around 3:15 pm at Phubala under Bishnupur district, when Biren and two other farmers were working in a paddy field located near the foothill areas. According to reports, approximately five rounds of gunfire were heard from the nearby hills, triggering panic among those present in the field.

A police team has reportedly been rushed to the site, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the full details of the incident. However, no official statement has been issued by the police or security agencies at the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, tension continues to prevail in Phubala and its adjoining areas as irate locals took to the streets, blocking roads in protest against the firing. They demanded that authorities take immediate action to ensure the safety and security of farmers working in vulnerable foothill zones.

According to residents, there have been similar incidents in the past, where suspected Kuki militants allegedly fired from hilltop positions at farmers working in paddy fields.
