Asian Games gold medallist Hima Das, widely known as the “Dhing Express,” has been handed a retrospective 16-month suspension by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). The suspension, which was effective from 22 July 2023 to 21 November 2024, comes despite her active participation in competitions earlier this year, raising questions about the handling of the case.
Hima’s suspension was issued under a ‘case resolution agreement’—a process in which the athlete accepts the consequences imposed without pursuing appeals. The athlete has since resumed training in Thiruvananthapuram and is eligible to compete in future events as her suspension period has officially ended.
The suspension announcement has sparked debate due to its timing and the athlete’s recent participation in multiple events, including the Indian Grand Prix in Bengaluru and the National Inter-State Meet in Panchkula in June. Notably, Hima competed in four races in June, well within the suspension period.
When contacted by media, Hima declined to comment, and an Athletics Federation of India (AFI) source confirmed that her suspension officially concluded in November.
The suspension follows a case resolution agreement, which is a negotiated settlement between the athlete and the anti-doping agency. The agreement stipulates that both parties accept the decision without further appeals.
Earlier this year, Hima had been provisionally suspended by NADA for three whereabouts failures within 12 months—a violation that can result in anti-doping sanctions. However, she was cleared by the Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel (ADDP) in March after a hearing, with the panel finding no evidence of wrongdoing.

Subsequently, on 4 September, NADA’s Anti-Doping Appeal Panel upheld the disciplinary panel’s ruling, exonerating Hima of the charges. The current retrospective suspension thus raises questions about the consistency of the decisions taken by NADA’s panels.
