A study published in IEEE Access on 15 October highlights the potential of skin conductance as a tool for detecting human emotions. Researchers from Tokyo Metropolitan University investigated how changes in sweat levels, which affect the skin’s electrical conductivity, could reveal emotional states. The findings suggest that these physiological responses, triggered by emotions such as fear, humour, or familial bonding, could contribute to the development of emotionally intelligent technologies in the future.
The study involved 33 participants who watched videos designed to elicit specific emotions, ranging from horror scenes to heart-warming family reunions. Probes attached to their fingers recorded how quickly skin conductance peaked and returned to baseline after an emotional stimulus. The data revealed distinct patterns: fear responses were the most prolonged, whereas humour led to quicker but shorter-lived reactions.
The researchers attributed fear’s extended response to evolutionary survival mechanisms. Meanwhile, the mixed emotional nature of familial bonding appeared to produce slower, overlapping reactions. They also highlighted that the dynamics of skin conductance in response to humour and fear remain underexplored in existing literature.
