In a move to support the ‘Digital India’ initiative and enhance the efficiency of ticketing services, Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has introduced 191 QR code machines across 422 locations in its five divisions: Katihar, Rangiya, Alipurduar, Lumding, and Tinsukia. These machines have been deployed at 587 booking counters so far. Additionally, 189 more QR code machines are in the advanced stages of procurement and are expected to be installed at selected stations soon.
Some of the key stations where these QR code machines have been installed include Guwahati, Kamakhya, New Jalpaiguri, Rangiya, New Tinsukia, Katihar, New Bongaigaon, Goalpara Town, Darjeeling, Kishanganj, New Coochbehar, and Ghum.
The introduction of the QR code-based ticketing system will enable passengers to book their tickets through various digital platforms. By scanning the QR code at the station, passengers can obtain their tickets without the need for physical interaction, reducing queues at ticket counters and minimizing cash transactions. This initiative is part of NFR’s ongoing efforts to modernize services and improve passenger convenience.

The NFR has previously implemented mobile app-based ticketing through the Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) app, allowing passengers to book unreserved tickets from their smartphones.
Under the ‘Digital India’ initiative, which focuses on contactless ticketing, cashless transactions, and enhanced customer experience, NFR encourages all rail users to take advantage of the cashless ticketing facilities at booking counters and actively participate in this digital transformation of Indian Railways.
