Shillong: Bindas Syiem ended her six-day hunger strike on June 11 after Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong assured her that the dilapidated Nongpoh-Umden-Sonapur Road in Meghalaya’s Ri Bhoi District would be constructed this year.
Syiem began her hunger strike on June 6, demanding immediate government action with a placard. Her protest gained significant attention, drawing increasing support from the public at the additional secretariat in Shillong.
Deputy CM Tynsong invited Syiem for talks, resulting in a positive outcome at his chamber. Tynsong detailed the project, explaining that it had been prioritized during the last tenure of the MDA government and included in the World Bank project list. However, the high amount earmarked by the World Bank delayed its implementation.

In March, a proposal for a 20 km road from Nongpoh to Umden was submitted to the Union Government through the North Eastern Council. The project includes reconstruction and widening, with an estimated cost of Rs 51-52 crores.
Syiem was joined by several NGOs and officials, including additional chief secretary Dr. Shakeel Ahammed, Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem, MDC Balajied Ranee, and others, during the meeting with the deputy CM.
