Dimapur: Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, Kevithuto Sophie, on Monday, informed that the Dimapur Police has been strictly enforcing the Auto Rickshaw Display Card System, initiated in December last year.
Addressing a press conference at his office, Sophie informed that the system aims to regulate auto rickshaw operations in Dimapur, Niuland, and Chumoukedima districts, parts of the erstwhile Dimapur region.
Sophie clarified that the Dimapur Traffic Police have commenced enforcement by checking auto rickshaws at various points and seizing those without display cards. These vehicles will be released upon acquisition of the necessary documentation, permits, etc.
The Auto Rickshaw Display Card System, initiated by the Dimapur Traffic Police, requires auto rickshaw operators to obtain a photo identity card featuring driver details, vehicle information, and jurisdiction. The cards, to be prominently displayed, facilitate regulation and streamline operations in the face of burgeoning auto rickshaw numbers.
Sophie emphasised the initiative’s goal to manage traffic congestion and enhance passenger safety. Approved by the Regional Transport Authority, the system aims to deter criminal activities involving auto rickshaws while ensuring passenger security, particularly for women and the elderly.
The commissioner urged passengers to utilise displayed contact information for reporting any concerns to the police control room promptly. Furthermore, the system targets unauthorised auto rickshaw operations, drivers without proper licenses, and vehicles with expired documents.
Sophie reassured that the system is not intended to harass drivers but to establish a necessary regulatory framework. While acknowledging potential challenges and complaints, he affirmed collaboration among police, transport authorities, and auto unions to address concerns and ensure effective implementation.

To date, over 800 auto drivers have registered for display cards, out of an estimated 3000-4000 registered with the Dimapur District Auto Drivers’ Union.
Implementation occurs gradually due to manpower constraints, with enforcement currently underway in select areas of Chumoukedima and Dimapur on a daily basis. Sophie confirmed that non-compliant auto rickshaws face penalties, including vehicle seizure, until proper documentation is obtained.
