Agartala: A team of doctors and medical professionals underwent training under the supervision of Shija Hospital and Research Institute (SHRI) to start the medical procedure of kidney transplant at Tripura’s biggest referral medical facility—GB Pant Hospital. The preparations for the first Renal transplant in the hospital’s super specialty block have been underway for the last three months, a social media post of Deputy Medical Superintendent of GBP Hospital Dr Kanak Choudhury reads.
Explaining why the number of patients suffering from chronic kidney disease is on the rise, he said, “The kidney of a person can face various problems. Primarily, in our state, abnormal levels of diabetes, high blood pressure, renal artery stenosis, and prolonged use of painkillers without consulting doctors are the key reasons behind chronic kidney disease. Chronic kidney disease gradually becomes a burden on the whole family and for many, kidney transplantation remains the last treatment option which is time-consuming, costly, and a complex medical procedure.”

Stating that patients from Tripura still rely on comparatively bigger states for such operations, he said, “For many patients, it is quite impossible to bear the hefty expenses associated with operation. In Tripura, we have no history of conducting such operations. But what has never happened in the past can be achieved in the future. For the past three months, with the help and cooperation of Shija Hospital in Manipur and under the supervision of the Tripura government, we have started preparing the stage for renal transplantation at Agartala Government Medical College’s super-specialty building. A team of doctors and medical staff comprising Nephrologists, urologists, nursing officers, anesthesiologists, and counselors visited Manipur and underwent the training. We hope things will move forward positively.”
