Guwahati: An FIR has been lodged against Anindya Sen, assistant professor of English at Assam University in Silchar for a Facebook post on Lord Ram. A 19-year-old Snehangshu Chakrabarty lodged the FIR at Silchar Sadar Police Station on Saturday, a day after the post. It alleges that Anindya Sen hurt religious sentiments.
The post read:
“She: And all this drama for a man who threw out his wife
Me: Ya. Abandoned his wife. Right
She: In fear of what ‘people’ would say
Me: Oh! You mean Sriramchandra! I was thinking of you know who!”

According to reports, the case was registered on August 7, a day after he made the post, under sections 295A which states: “Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings or any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs”; section 294, “Whoever, to the annoyance of others, (a) does any obscene act in any public place, or (b) sings, recites or utters any obscene song, ballad or words, in or near any public place” and sections 501,” Printing or engraving matter known to be defamatory—Whoever prints or engraves any matter, knowing or having a good reason to believe that such matter is defamatory of any person” of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The punishment under the sections imposed can lead to imprisonment for a year which can be extended, or with fine, or with both.

Sen is startled by this response to his Facebook post. He claims that there are various versions of Ramayana and in some of them it has been mentioned that Sri Ram has abandoned his wife. And this act has been condemned and written about it as well. He believes that he simply shared the sentiment through his post.
