Aizawl: The Mizoram government has approved 11 applicants to manufacture local fruit beer in the state following scrutiny of applications received under the Mizoram Liquor (Prohibition) Amendment Act, 2025.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma chaired a meeting of the Selection Committee at his office on Thursday to consider applications for licences to manufacture local fruit beer and establish wineries. Excise & Narcotics Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar also attended the meeting.
A total of 99 applications were received, including 96 for local fruit beer manufacturing and three for establishing wineries. Following interviews with applicants and site inspections, where feasible, the committee approved 11 applications for local fruit beer manufacturing. Another 13 applicants were given additional time for further scrutiny.
The Chief Minister said the initiative should prioritise farmers’ interests by creating better opportunities to sell locally grown fruits and agricultural produce at remunerative prices.
He also stressed that fruit processing must use modern technology and comply strictly with food safety standards, with due importance given to public health.
The committee assessed applicants on several criteria, including compliance with food safety requirements, availability of appropriate manufacturing equipment, technical manpower, financial capacity and the ability to use fruits and agricultural produce grown in Mizoram.
The government also proposed training for selected applicants, stronger linkages between manufacturers and farmers, and inter-visits among selected units to promote knowledge-sharing and the exchange of best practices.
The committee recommended developing a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for licence holders. The government also decided to extend the application period to allow more prospective applicants to apply.
The Selection Committee comprises representatives from the Commerce & Industries Department, Excise & Narcotics Department, Horticulture Department and Food & Drugs Administration, along with representatives of Mizoram University and individual experts with specialised knowledge in the field. The CEO of the Handholding Scheme is also a member of the committee.
