The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Sumeet Singhal, has concluded the statutory inspection of the newly laid double line between Chhaygaon and Mirza stations, conducted on 27th June 2024. Following the inspection, approval was granted for the operation of trains on the new railway line. With the commissioning of this section, the route on the south bank of the Brahmaputra, from New Bongaigaon to Azara via Goalpara, is now operational as a double line. This additional line is expected to facilitate the transport of more freight and passenger traffic, enabling the operation of more trains at higher speeds and improving connectivity with reduced travel times.
The Chhaygaon-Mirza stretch spans 15.558 km and forms part of the New Bongaigaon-Kamakhya via Goalpara 176 km double line project. The project is being executed in phases, with sections being commissioned incrementally. The CRS conducted a speed trial on the section and a thorough inspection of all bridges, Road Under Bridges (RUB), and signalling systems.

Previously, on 28th February 2024, the 8.782 km section between Bamunigaon and Chhaygaon was commissioned. Additionally, on 17th October 2023, the 25.459 km section between Dhupdhara and Bamunigaon was commissioned, followed by the 11.35 km section between Mirza and Azara on 3rd May 2023, and the 29.71 km section between Dudhnai and Dhupdhara on 24th November 2022.
Once the entire New Bongaigaon-Kamakhya via Goalpara section is completed, it will significantly enhance connectivity in the northeast, facilitating the transportation of both people and goods across the region and the rest of the nation. The completion of this double-line project will also greatly benefit the remote areas of Meghalaya.
