To meet the summer electricity demand, the government of India has planned to use gas-based power plants. This decision was taken due to the peak evening power demand of 224 GW in April 2024.
The government had taken various measures to meet the peak demand of 224 GW of electricity in April 2024. These included putting in place advance planning measures, optimizing hydropower generation, and shifting planned maintenance work.
With these measures in place, it is expected that the power demand will be adequately met both during the day and during the night hours in the summer months of May and June 2024.
In May 2024, the power demand is expected to peak at 235 GW during the day and 225 GW during the evening hours. This is 4 GW more than what was already available in April. The government expects that the power generation from wind will increase by 4 GW to 5 GW in May and June.

The government has also issued Section 11 directions to gas-based power plants to make available an additional 6 GW of electricity for May and June. This is in addition to the 10 GW that was already available earlier.
The shifting of planned maintenance and minimization of partial and forced outages of thermal power plants has also made available an additional 5 GW for the summer season.
