Kalimpong: Darjeeling MP and BJP national spokesperson, Raju Bista, has congratulated the Rongring Lepcha Cultural and Welfare Society (RLCWS) for winning the World Summit Award 2023 in the “Culture and Heritage” category.
The RLCWS, based in Upper Salimbong, Kalimpong, was recognized for its innovative use of digital technology to preserve and promote the ancient Lepcha language.
The RLCWS’s flagship initiative, the Rongring Online Language Classroom, was commended for its role in preserving the Lepcha language and providing learning opportunities for students worldwide. The initiative was also acknowledged for its societal impact and contribution to the conservation of indigenous languages.
The World Summit Award (WSA), initiated by the United Nations and supported by the European Union and other major organisations, recognises digital innovation across eight categories.
The RLCWS was the only winner from India in 2023, making their achievement particularly significant.
MP Bista praised the region’s youth for utilising digital platforms for such a noble cause, emphasising the importance of digital innovation in addressing societal challenges.
He commended the RLCWS for ensuring the continued vitality of the Lepcha language and described their achievement as a source of pride for the region, the nation, and tribal communities across India.
