Kohima: At least four people have died and five others remain missing after massive landslides triggered by extreme weather conditions struck Nagaland’s Mon district on Sunday.
According to Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) Secretary Sentiwapang Aier, the bodies of four victims including three women and one man, have been recovered, while search operations are underway to trace the five missing persons.
Several people were also injured in Naginimora following the landslides.
Aier said the heavy rainfall has triggered landslides and caused damage to houses and infrastructure across several districts of the State. The NSDMA, through the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC), is closely monitoring the evolving situation and coordinating with district authorities.
Search and rescue operations are being carried out by the District Administration, District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Nagaland Police, Assam Rifles and local volunteers.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio expressed grief over the tragedy in a post on X.
“Deeply distressing reports of heavy landslides in Mon. My heartfelt condolences to those who’ve lost loved ones. The State Govt. is closely monitoring the situation. NSDMA, Dist. Admin, DDMA, SDRF, Police, AR & local community are working on ground for search & rescue operations,” he wrote.
The Chief Minister said the State government would provide immediate ex-gratia assistance to the families of those who lost their lives and extend relief to all affected by the disaster.
Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav also expressed deep sorrow over the incident, which claimed lives and caused extensive damage to property and infrastructure.
In a message, the Governor conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families, prayed for the eternal peace of the departed souls, and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
He appreciated the efforts of the District Administration, NSDMA, SDRF, Nagaland Police, Assam Rifles, medical personnel and other agencies involved in the ongoing rescue and relief operations. He also urged people to remain vigilant and follow official advisories amid the continuing adverse weather.
The Governor said his thoughts and prayers are with the people of Mon district and all those affected by the severe weather conditions across Nagaland.
