Kohima: The Directorate of Census Operations, Nagaland, on Wednesday appealed for public cooperation to ensure accurate and reliable data collection during Census 2027.
The appeal was made during a press conference held at the Kohima Press Club and jointly organised by the Government of Nagaland, the Directorate of Census Operations, Nagaland, and the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Kohima. The programme aimed to brief media representatives on various aspects of the upcoming Census exercise.
Addressing the gathering, Director of Census Operations, Nagaland, Dr Kenie Miachieo, provided an overview of Census 2027 and its significance. He said the Census is a Union subject under Entry 69 of the Union List in the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution and is conducted under the provisions of the Census Act, 1948, and the Census Rules, 1990.
Dr Miachieo emphasised that all information collected during the Census is kept confidential under Section 15 of the Census Act. He added that the exercise is carried out in collaboration with state governments and Union Territories.
Noting that the last Census was conducted in 2011, he said Census 2027 will be the country’s 16th Census and the eighth since Independence.
Responding to questions on the accuracy of Census data, Dr Miachieo expressed confidence that extensive awareness campaigns and the cooperation of the public, community organisations, village authorities and other stakeholders would help ensure reliable data collection.
He also reminded citizens that furnishing false information during the Census is punishable under the Census Act, 1948.
Highlighting the technological features of Census 2027, Dr Miachieo said data would be collected through a mobile application, while citizens would also have the option of self-enumeration. He added that a web-based portal would be used for monitoring and managing Census activities, while House Listing Blocks would be created through a web-mapping application.
According to him, the self-enumeration period in Nagaland will be from June 16 to June 30, 2026, while the House Listing and Housing Census will be conducted from July 1 to July 30, 2026.
Speaking on the state’s preparedness, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) in the Office of the Commissioner, Nagaland, Kelevituo Nisa, outlined the administrative arrangements and training programmes undertaken across the state.
