Kohima: Governor of Nagaland, Nand Kishore Yadav, on Monday reviewed the progress of water supply and sanitation initiatives in the state during a comprehensive meeting with officials of the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) at Naga Bhavan Conference Hall, Lok Bhavan in Kohima.
During the review meeting held on Monday, PHED officials led by Secretary Zarenthung Ezung presented an overview of ongoing projects under key national programmes such as the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) and the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen).
The officers informed the Governor that Nagaland has achieved 94.91% household tap water coverage, with more than 3.45 lakh households connected under JJM as of April 1, 2026. Several districts have recorded significant progress, with some blocks already achieving 100% Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTC).
The department further highlighted that 1,258 villages (88%) in the state have been declared ODF Plus, reflecting sustained improvements in sanitation infrastructure, solid and liquid waste management systems, and community hygiene practices.
Success stories from multiple districts were also showcased during the meeting, particularly highlighting community-led water supply systems and waste management initiatives, demonstrating strong grassroots participation and local ownership.
During the review, the Governor noted key challenges affecting implementation, including depleting water sources, funding constraints, and maintenance-related issues. He stressed the importance of adopting sustainable water management practices, ensuring timely execution of projects, and strengthening community participation to maintain long-term outcomes.
Emphasising climate-resilient solutions, the Governor also stressed on the need to promote rainwater harvesting, especially in urban and water-stressed areas, and encouraged the department to expand awareness and adoption across the state.
