Kohima: The ‘Run 4 Green Dimapur Marathon’ culminated on Saturday at the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) Office, bringing together government agencies, civil society groups, and hundreds of participants in a marathon aimed at promoting environmental awareness, cleaner air, and a greener city.
Organised by the DMC in collaboration with the District Administration, Dimapur Development Authority, Department of Environment and Climate Change, Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB), the National Youth Climate Consortium (NYCC), and partner NGOs including Team Better Dimapur, Can Youth, and Pro-Rural, the event brought together officials, citizens, and youth in a united call for sustainability.
The programme was chaired by Lensanaro, with a welcome address delivered by DMC Chief Executive Officer, Thungchanbemo Tungoe.
Speaking at the event, Boka Rochill of NYCC described the marathon as the start of a transformative journey for the city. He said Run4Green was not just a run but a new chapter and a new beginning to make Dimapur greener and healthier, stressing that the initiative called on youth and communities to actively build a sustainable future.
L.H. Thangi Mannen, Director and Founding Member of Earth Alliance, Nagaland, underlined that the event represented both a personal and collective commitment to the environment.
She stated that it was not only about running for a greener Dimapur but also about running for oneself, emphasising that the movement must begin immediately to build a much greener future. She further urged continued and expanded efforts to ensure a lasting impact.
EAC Dimapur, Imlijungla Lemtur, noted that the initiative was historic in bringing together multiple government agencies with a shared vision. She remarked that it was the first time so many agencies had united as one, and stressed the need to contribute by planting more trees, making Dimapur greener, and awakening from complacency.
NPCB Member Secretary, Yanathung Kithan, also addressed the gathering, while participants and leaders alike echoed the importance of collective action and community participation in addressing environmental challenges.
The culmination saw prize distribution conducted by Adrian M. Mahung. In the Open Men’s category, Abhishek Yadav won first place, followed by Prince Yadav as runner-up. In the Open Women’s category, Tsuchoi T. emerged winner, with Songmo P. securing second. Among juniors, Chuimthang Zimik and Andan claimed the top two spots in the Boys’ category, while Supai S. and Apong N. finished first and second in the Girls’ category.
The marathon witnessed a strong turnout of 687 participants: 227 in the Open category (164 men and 63 women) and 460 in the Junior category (320 boys and 140 girls).
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by C. Thsapise Anar, who extended gratitude to all stakeholders, participants, and supporters of the initiative.
