Nagaland University’s School of Engineering and Technology (SET), in collaboration with Tetso College, has inaugurated the international conference on “Biologically Inspired Techniques in Many-Criteria Decision-Making (BITMDM 2024).” The two-day event, held in a hybrid format from 6-7 December, focuses on “Advances in Multidisciplinary Research and Innovation.” The inaugural ceremony took place at Lorin Hall, Tetso College, bringing together researchers, practitioners, and academics from diverse fields.
Prof. Prabhakar Sharma, a member of the organising committee from Nagaland University, presided over the ceremony. In her welcome address, Prof. Sujata Dash, Programme Chair of BITMDM 2024, highlighted the importance of the conference as a platform for discussing advancements in biologically inspired techniques and data analytics to tackle complex decision-making challenges. She noted that the event includes ten technical sessions spanning six tracks.
Delivering the keynote address, Prof. A. Elayaperumal, Director of NIT Nagaland, emphasised the fundamental role of biology in inspiring scientific and technological innovation. He pointed out that economic and social development hinges on education, research, and innovation, urging investment in these areas for comprehensive progress. Prof. Elayaperumal also encouraged Naga youth to step out of their comfort zones and compete on national and global levels.
He drew attention to the unique potential of Northeast India’s rich forest resources, including medicinal plants, for advancing bioscience and biotechnology. By fostering strong research and development efforts, the region could leverage these resources for economic benefits while contributing to public health, education, and infrastructure. He also discussed the paradox of modern medical advancements coexisting with a rise in lifestyle-related diseases, urging a balanced focus on physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

The chief guest, Prof. J.K. Patnaik, Vice Chancellor of Nagaland University, addressed the gathering online, emphasising the relevance of the conference theme in the current technological landscape. He highlighted the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) as a driving force in the fourth industrial revolution while questioning whether these advancements have truly enhanced human happiness. Prof. Patnaik underlined the need for innovative approaches to address the unique challenges posed by AI’s rapid evolution.
The conference was officially inaugurated by Prof. V.K. Vidyarthi, Dean of SET at Nagaland University. The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Er. Shanchamo Yanthan, Assistant Professor in the Department of IT at Nagaland University and Co-Chair of the inaugural ceremony. Imsuenla Tzudir, Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at Tetso College, served as the rapporteur for the event.
