Kohima: The newly constructed Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Memorial Hall Indoor Stadium was inaugurated by K Konngam Konyak, Advisor for Art & Culture and Treasuries & Accounts, during a ceremony held at Rhododendron Resort, Phesama, on Wednesday.
In his inaugural address, Konyak applauded the contractors and engineers for completing the project on time, emphasising the significance of the facility for the local community.
“This building belongs to our people and will be used by us,” he said, expressing hope that similar facilities across Kohima would benefit the public. He also highlighted the importance of proper maintenance, urging authorities to manage water and electricity supplies efficiently to ensure quality amenities for visitors.
Highlighting the hall’s long-term potential, Konyak remarked that with adequate upkeep, the hall could serve the community for years to come, particularly during prominent events such as the Hornbill Festival.
Executive Engineer Er Talitemsu Jamir of the Department of Art & Culture presented a project report, revealing that the hall was funded by the Government of India through the Ministry of Culture as part of the 125th birth anniversary celebrations for Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The project, valued at Rs 830 lakh, received full financial support from the central government. It was sanctioned on July 14, 2022, and awarded to M/S Ketoupuzo Lhoushe on November 29, 2022, with a targeted completion time of 24 months. However, Jamir proudly noted that the project was finished ahead of schedule.
The new hall is designed as a multipurpose venue, equipped to host a variety of sports, including volleyball, table tennis, gymnastics, handball, boxing, wrestling, basketball, and badminton, in addition to cultural events. Jamir explained that the facility would serve athletes, sports enthusiasts, and the broader community, providing a safe and comfortable space for both athletic and social gatherings, which is expected to positively impact local sports development.

The inauguration ceremony included the unveiling of a stone monolith, and a dedicatory prayer was led by Rokuovilie Zashümo, pastor of Baptist Church, Phesama.
The program was chaired by Peihau Nsarangbe, Assistant Director of Art & Culture. Kovi Meyase, Secretary of the Art & Culture Department, delivered the welcome address, while Adela Moa, Director of Art & Culture, offered a vote of thanks. The event also featured a special performance by singer Keziah Semy.
