Kohima: The 8th edition of the Captain N Kenguruse MVC Memorial Football Tournament culminated in a thrilling final at Kohima’s Indira Gandhi Stadium on Tuesday where the Headhunters emerged victorious.
The team clinched the champion’s prize of Rs 3 lakh, while Mez & Co claimed the runner-up spot with a reward of Rs 1.5 lakh.
Imkong L Imchen, Advisor for Information & Public Relations and Soil & Water Conservation, graced the closing ceremony as Chief Guest. In his address, Imchen paid homage to Captain N. Kenguruse, MVC, a celebrated Naga hero, whose life, he noted, exemplified selfless service, sacrifice, and integrity. Imchen urged the young athletes to embrace these values, encouraging them to pursue leadership and sportsmanship both on and off the field.
The Advisor commended the Indian Army and Assam Rifles for organising the event and for their dedication to promoting sports and engaging Nagaland’s youth. He described the tournament as a vital platform for young athletes to exhibit their talent and dedication.
Imchen also urged the players to continue excelling and to embody resilience, teamwork, and leadership in all their pursuits. Highlighting the importance of community development, environmental conservation, and nation-building, he called on the youth to play active roles in these areas. The Advisor further lauded the Indian Army and Assam Rifles for their essential role in fostering peace, security, and humanitarian efforts.
Imchen by expressed optimism about the future, inspired by the young leaders participating in the tournament.
In addition to the main awards, several players received individual honours. The tournament’s Golden Boot went to Kurisanyü, the Best Defender award was claimed by Thejangulie Zatsu, Best Goalkeeper was awarded to Dziesengulie, and Hemping L was recognized as the Best Player of the tournament.
