Kohima: After a recent tragedy in which a young boy drowned in an open pond, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) of Chümoukedima has issued an advisory urging enhanced safety measures around open water bodies.
Released by Deputy Commissioner and DDMA Chairman Polan John, NCS, the advisory aims to prevent accidents associated with ponds, trenches, and other potential hazards.
The advisory stresses that property owners and village councils must ensure the safety of areas with open or deep ponds and fisheries by installing secure fencing to prevent accidental falls, particularly involving children.
Warning signs, such as “WARNING: DEEP WATER,” should be placed prominently around these water bodies to alert the public to possible dangers. Trenches used for earth or boulder extraction should also be properly fenced to deter accidental entry.
Village councils have been tasked with overseeing compliance with these safety guidelines. The DDMA’s proactive approach seeks to protect the community by addressing risks in public spaces and preventing similar tragedies.
