Kohima: In a tragic incident at Nsonji Lake in Tsimenyu district of Nagaland, an Indian Army soldier from the Assam Regiment, Sepoy Shwensinlo Semp, lost his life after rescuing a friend from drowning.
In a poignant testament to the unwavering courage and selflessness of the armed forces, the sepoy exhibited extraordinary bravery during a tragic incident at Nsonji Lake, Tsimenyu.
On June 30, 2024, while on leave and enjoying a picnic with friends, Sepoy Shwensinlo demonstrated the essence of duty and sacrifice in the face of adversity, as per the PRO Defence of Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh.
During the outing near Nsonji Lake, a friend of the soldier encountered perilous waters and struggled to stay afloat. Without hesitation, Sepoy Shwensinlo leaped into the lake and successfully rescued his friend. However, during the rescue, he became entangled in weeds and mud on the lakebed, preventing him from saving himself.

Following the tragic event, Assam Rifles collaborated with civil authorities, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), to conduct a rigorous operation to recover Sepoy Shwensinlo’s body from the lake on July 1, 2024.
“We mourn the loss of a true hero whose actions exemplified the highest ideals of military service. Sepoy Shwensinlo Semp’s legacy will forever be honored and remembered for his unwavering commitment to duty and his comrades,” the PRO said.
