Kohima: The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has issued an orange alert for several districts in the state, warning of heavy to extremely severe rainfall expected until July 8, 2024.

This alert signifies the need for preparedness in anticipation of severe weather conditions.

The districts of Kiphire, Phek, Noklak, Shamator, and Tuensang are expected to bear the brunt of the adverse weather, with the orange alert in place from July 2 to July 4, 2024. During this period, these areas are likely to experience the most significant rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

Residents have been advised to take precautionary measures and exercise caution to prevent harm from lightning strikes and strong winds, which may disrupt communication and connectivity.

The NSDMA has also highlighted the risk of flash floods and waterlogging, especially in the lowland and foothill regions, including Dimapur, Niuland, Chumukedima, Bhandari, Pangti, Tizit, and Tuli.

The heavy rainfall is expected to cause a surge in water levels of all major rivers in the state. The NSDMA strongly advises the public to avoid picnicking and fishing near riverbanks and warns farmers against camping or sleeping overnight near rivers due to the risk of sudden flooding.

The NSDMA, Home Department, has called on all District Disaster Management Authorities and relevant departments to stay vigilant and ready to respond to any emergencies to safeguard lives and properties during this period.
