Kohima: Japan’s Ambassador to India, Suzuki Hiroshi, on Wednesday inaugurated the Kohima Peace Memorial and laid the foundation stone for an under-construction Eco-Park in Kohima, Nagaland.
The ambassador, along with Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio also planted trees.
In his address, Ambassador Hiroshi pointed out the significance of the Kohima Peace Memorial, which pays homage to the victims of the devastating Battle of Kohima during World War II.
He acknowledged the sacrifices made by the people of Nagaland, who endured unimaginable hardships during the conflict between the Japanese and British Commonwealth Forces in the famous “Battle of the Tennis Courts” 80 years ago.
Expressing heartfelt gratitude towards the Nagaland community for their warmth and generosity, Ambassador Hiroshi highlighted the collaborative efforts of Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and local stakeholders in realising the memorial.
He paid tribute to individuals like Ajanuo Belho from Kohima village, who hosted the Japanese entourage back in the mid-1970 and is also a part of the Kohima-Japan Bone Collection Team.
Ambassador Hiroshi further lauded the contributions of Japanese veterans and their families, whose donations supported the construction of the Kohima Cathedral, exemplifying an enduring bond between Japan and Nagaland.
He unveiled plans for an Eco-Park adjacent to the memorial, funded by the Japanese Government’s Official Development Assistance (ODA), envisioning it as a serene haven symbolising the enduring friendship between nations.
Highlighting the exchange of young talent between Nagaland and Japan, Ambassador Hiroshi emphasised initiatives aimed at empowering Naga youth through skill training and cultural exchange programs. He cited the establishment of a Japanese language course at Nagaland University.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio hailed the inauguration of the Kohima Peace Memorial as a historic milestone in the evolution of the Naga-Japan partnership, symbolising the journey from conflict to peace and brotherhood. He reiterated Nagaland’s commitment to promoting universal peace and fostering bilateral cooperation across various sectors.

Reflecting on his visit to the Peace Memorial in Hiroshima, Chief Minister Rio emphasised the imperative of propagating peace in a world scarred by the ravages of war. He affirmed Nagaland’s dedication to deepening ties with Japan through initiatives in forestry, medical sectors, and cultural exchange programmes.
The ceremony, chaired by Nagaland’s Chief Secretary J Alam, witnessed the participation of legislators, state officials and dignitaries.
