Kohima: In a move aimed at combating environmental pollution, the Superintendent of Police, Kohima, Bharat Laxman Markad, formally launched the AVL 437 DUO Vehicle Emission Checking Machine at the SP Office on Tuesday.
The machine, as per the Kohima Police, is capable of checking both diesel and petrol variant vehicles.
The SP Markad flagged off three traffic patrol motorcycles dedicated to enforcement purposes. These initiatives, funded under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), highlights the commitment of the Kohima Police towards environmental conservation and public safety.
Addressing the gathering, SP Markad emphasised the urgent need to curb activities that harm the environment, with vehicle emissions being identified as a major contributor to environmental pollution in the district.
He said that with the introduction of the AVL 437 DUO machine, the police now have the capability to effectively monitor and enforce vehicle emission standards.
The officer also urged enforcement teams to remain dedicated and sincere in carrying out their assigned duties, highlighting the importance of stringent enforcement measures in ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
The programme, led by the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic), Kohima, also included a dedicatory prayer pronounced by an Associate Pastor from PUBC, Kohima.

During the event, it was announced that random checks of suspected vehicles not meeting emission norms would be conducted regularly. There will be penalties for driving vehicles violating road safety and noise/air pollution standards, as outlined under Section 190 (2) of the Motor Vehicles Act.
Offenders may imprisonment of up to three months and/or fines for the first offence, along with a three-month license disqualification. For subsequent offences, the penalties increase to imprisonment of up to six months and/or fines.
