Kohima: In a historic triumph, Team Nagaland clinched the title in the 40+ men’s football category at the 6th National Masters Games held in Goa, marking a significant milestone for the state’s sporting fraternity.
The final showdown witnessed an intense battle between Nagaland and Kerala, with the former emerging victorious with a scoreline of 2-1. This victory holds special significance as it marks Nagaland’s first major win in the event, despite the state’s consistent participation over the years.
In a thrilling semi-final match against neighbouring Assam, Nagaland secured a hard-fought victory with a score of 2-1, paving the way for their entry into the finals held at the Don Bosco Engineering College Ground, Fatorda Goa.
The goals that sealed Nagaland’s triumph in the final match were scored by Seyiekhrietuo Suohu and Vizorü Peseyie in the 5th and 14th minutes of the game respectively, showcasing the team’s exceptional skill and determination.
Under the leadership of captain Roko Angami, and with Mhasimhalie Matthew Yhome serving as vice-captain and Khriesazo Liezietsu as team manager, Team Nagaland demonstrated remarkable teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
The victory has sparked joy and excitement among the players and supporters alike, with team captain Roko Angami expressing his elation over the phone. He emphasised the significance of the win in boosting the morale of the entire state and encouraging older players to continue their sporting pursuits.
Despite competing in only one of the numerous categories at the National Masters Games, Team Nagaland’s achievement resonates deeply within the sporting community. Angami noted that Nagaland’s performance was particularly commendable given the formidable contingent size of over 600 athletes from Kerala.
