AIR Aizawl marks 90 yrs with musical concert, honours leading Mizo artists

Aizawl: As part of the 90th anniversary celebrations of All India Radio, All India Radio Aizawl hosted a musical concert at Central YMA Hall, Tuikhuahtlang, bringing together artists, officials, and music lovers in a tribute to the broadcaster’s cultural legacy.

The event was attended by IPRP&S Minister B. Lalchhanzova, who highlighted the pivotal role AIR has played in preserving Mizo language, culture, and identity. He noted that at a time when many indigenous traditions face erosion, institutions like AIR remain vital in sustaining cultural heritage, promoting literature and music, and fostering a sense of pride among communities.

In his welcome address, DR Lalropuia, Director of AIR Aizawl and Cluster Head, traced the evolution of All India Radio, noting its role as a key communication medium even before India’s independence. He said AIR has gone beyond news broadcasting to serve as a crucial link between the government and the public, and continues to remain relevant in the broader vision of national development.

Established on June 8, 1936, AIR operates 230 stations across India, including Aizawl. As part of the ongoing celebrations, AIR Aizawl will organise a walkathon on May 8, 2026, while the main commemorative event is scheduled for June 8 at Vanapa Hall, with Chief Minister Lalduhoma expected to attend as chief guest.

During the programme, Top Grade artist Vanhlupuii and ‘A’ Grade artists Laltlanthangi Pachuau, Siampuii Sailo, C. Vansanga, and Rualthankhuma Chhakchhuak were honoured for their contributions to music and culture. The event featured a series of musical performances, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.

AIR Aizawl is also marking its 60th year, with a series of programmes planned not only in Aizawl but across different clusters in the region.
