The Mizoram Board of School Education (MBSE) on Tuesday declared the HSLC Examination 2026 results, recording an overall pass percentage of 80.31%.
A total of 18,257 students from 714 schools appeared for the examination, of whom 14,663 candidates passed. The highest mark secured was 480. As many as 146 schools recorded a 100% pass rate, while 13 schools reported a 100% failure rate.
Among subjects, Social Science saw the highest number of failures, with 3,258 students not clearing the paper, while Mizo recorded the lowest number of failures at 469. Aizawl district registered the highest pass percentage at 89.60%, whereas Lawngtlai district recorded the lowest at 61.49%.
Speaking to media persons, MBSE Chairman JH Zoremthanga said the question papers were designed with 60% based on Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) and 40% on application-based and Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS), reflecting a gradual shift towards competency-based assessment.
He also announced key changes in the presentation of results. The board has discontinued publishing the list of top ten rank holders, aligning with practices followed by boards such as CBSE and CISCE.
Additionally, while earlier results displayed first, second and third divisions alongside students’ names, this year only names were published, with individual marks accessible online.
Zoremthanga said the move is aimed at reducing academic pressure and discouraging excessive stress among students over board examination results. He emphasised that, for higher education, performance in competitive examinations such as NEET, JEE and CUET holds greater significance than HSLC rankings.
He further noted that, under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the board is preparing to transition towards a credit and grading system. He added that MBSE plans to continue revising question patterns in line with these reforms.
