Mizoram is hosting the 23rd North East States Chess Championship, the largest chess tournament in the North Eastern region, at R. Dengthuama Indoor Stadium, Mualpui, with players from across the region participating in the event.

The championship was inaugurated by Sports and Youth Services Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar, who welcomed the visiting players and encouraged them to explore Mizoram during their stay. He invited participants to return to the state with their families and friends and urged them to experience the ongoing Winter Festival if time permitted.

Highlighting the growing importance of chess, the Minister said the game has brought recognition and pride to India on the global stage. He added that Mizoram and other North Eastern states should promote chess not only as a popular sport but also as a discipline through which players can gain international exposure.

Describing chess as a game of intellect and discipline, he said it also helps build patience and mental resilience, particularly in an age dominated by social media and shrinking attention spans among youth.

A total of 280 players from various North Eastern states are taking part in the championship. Arunachal Pradesh is represented by 14 players, Assam by 52, Manipur by 7, Nagaland by 16, Sikkim by 49 and Tripura by 9, while Mizoram has the largest contingent with 103 players. The competition will feature matches across seven different age categories, with 24 women players also participating.

The championship is being organised under the leadership of Dr Lalhmuchhuaka, Senior Vice President of the Mizoram Chess Association. K.W. Wajri, President of the North East Chess Forum, and Sharad Agarwal, IPS, Director General of Police, were among the dignitaries who addressed the gathering.

This is the second time Mizoram is hosting the North East States Chess Championship. The four-day tournament will conclude on December 20, 2025.
