Aizawl: A joint delegation comprising the Mizoram Transformation Movement (MTM), Centre for Environment and Social Justice (CESJ), Mizoram First (MF), and the Citizens Alliance for Truth and Social Justice (CATAJ) met with Virendra Kumar Jakhar, Executive Director of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), at his Aizawl office to raise concerns over the rapidly deteriorating condition of the Sairang to Kawnpui stretch of the National Highway.

The delegation voiced alarm over the hazardous state of the road, which has resulted in frequent vehicle overturning incidents and recurring traffic blockages. These issues, they said, are severely affecting transportation, daily commuting, and overall connectivity in Mizoram.

In response, Jakhar acknowledged the gravity of the situation and assured the delegation that the NHIDCL is committed to resolving the matter as swiftly as possible. However, he noted that black-topping and major roadwork cannot proceed during the monsoon season due to adverse weather conditions.

He further clarified the jurisdictional status of nearby road segments, stating that the Kharang to Kawnpui and Bilkhawthlir to Kolasib sections are still under the purview of the Mizoram Public Works Department (PWD). These sections are in the process of being officially transferred to NHIDCL, after which the corporation will assume full responsibility for maintenance and repair.

A major hurdle delaying progress, he added, is the pending tree felling required before construction can begin. Although forest clearance has already been granted, the tree felling operation is under the jurisdiction of the Mizoram Forest Department and has yet to be initiated.

The delegation urged faster coordination between agencies and stressed the urgency of ensuring safe and functional highways for the people of Mizoram.
