Aizawl: Mizoram Excise and Narcotics Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar on Saturday revealed that the state is home to over 14,000 drug-injecting users, highlighting a growing public health and social crisis that calls for immediate and united action.
Speaking at the 90th YMA Day celebration organised by the YMA Tlangnuam Branch at Tlangnuam Community Hall, the minister said the figure was alarming and indicative of the urgent need for coordinated intervention. He called for collective efforts from government agencies, civil society, churches, and youth organisations.
He noted that despite major crackdowns by the authorities, drug trafficking through Mizoram continues to pose serious concerns. In 2024 alone, the Mizoram Excise Department seized around 46.68 kg of heroin, while the Mizoram Police recovered another 80.81 kg—bringing the combined total to 127.49 kg of narcotics. However, the minister admitted that these seizures represent only a fraction of the actual volume being trafficked through the state.
Addressing the wider audience, he emphasised the vital role of the Church in rehabilitation and prevention efforts. “We must organise joint church-led rehabilitation camps. One major, state-wide camp involving all denominations is urgently needed,” he urged. He added that the church has been an indispensable partner in offering care and hope to drug users and their families, but that stronger collaboration is now essential.
