Aizawl: Leaders of the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) General Headquarters met Mizoram Home Minister K. Sapdanga on June 3 to discuss the ongoing construction of a guest house by the Tripura government at Phuldungsei village, located in the disputed Thaidawr Hill area along the Mizoram-Tripura border.
The ₹300-lakh guest house, reportedly being built by the Tripura Forest Department, is currently manned by personnel from the Tripura State Rifles. During the meeting, the MZP requested the Home Minister to deploy Mizoram State Police in the area to ensure security and uphold the state’s territorial rights.
Just last week, the MZP, Mizoram’s apex student body, strongly condemned a low-intensity blast that occurred in the early hours of May 28 at the under-construction guest house site. The issue was deliberated during the MZP’s Executive Meeting held at its General Headquarters on Wednesday, where the organisation expressed serious concern over the explosion, which occurred around 2–3 AM and damaged parts of the facility.
In a statement issued after the meeting, the MZP accused the Tripura government of encroaching on Mizoram’s territory, asserting that Phuldungsei village lies within Mizoram’s jurisdiction. The student body urged the Mizoram government to take immediate action to both investigate the blast and oppose what they described as illegal construction by the neighbouring state. They also alleged that the explosion may have been an attempt to put Mizoram in a bad light, given the disputed nature of the area.
According to police sources, unidentified individuals hurled explosives at the site, which was unoccupied at the time.
MZP leaders informed the Home Minister that they had personally visited the location to assess the situation. They reiterated their demand for the deployment of Mizoram Police personnel at Thaidawr Hill to protect the area and maintain order.
In response, Home Minister K. Sapdanga appreciated the MZP’s initiative and assured them that personnel from the Mizoram Indian Reserve Battalion (IRBn) would be deployed along the Kawnpui–Thaidawr route.
He also stated that he had spoken with the Tripura Tourism Minister and requested that construction of the guest house be halted. He added that the issue would be pursued at the official level between the two state governments.
Additionally, Sapdanga said that the Mizoram government had asked the Tripura government to dismantle a check gate reportedly erected at Thaidawr Hill.
