Agartala: The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has sanctioned Rs 273.46 crore for the expansion of Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC), including a major increase in MBBS and postgraduate seats from the 2026-27 academic session, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said on Thursday.
According to an official communication issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Rs 150 crore has been approved for increasing MBBS seats at AGMC from 150 to 250, including 15 seats under the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) category. The Centre’s share in the project will be Rs 135 crore.
The ministry has also approved the addition of 83 postgraduate seats across 19 disciplines under a centrally sponsored scheme aimed at strengthening and upgrading state government medical colleges.
The total approved cost for the postgraduate expansion is Rs 123.46 crore, of which the Centre will contribute Rs 111.11 crore, the letter stated.
Sharing the development on social media, Saha thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J. P. Nadda for sanctioning the funds for infrastructure development at AGMC.
“It will help us increase 100 MBBS seats and 83 postgraduate seats in 19 critical and speciality disciplines from the academic year 2026-27,” the chief minister said.
He added that the state would have a total of 550 MBBS seats and 196 postgraduate seats after the expansion.
According to the ministry’s communication, additional postgraduate seats have been sanctioned in departments including anaesthesia, general medicine, general surgery, community medicine, forensic medicine, pathology, pharmacology, anatomy, biochemistry, microbiology, paediatrics, physiology, psychiatry, respiratory medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, ophthalmology, and otorhinolaryngology.
The approval was granted under the centrally sponsored schemes for “Strengthening and upgradation of state government medical colleges for starting new PG disciplines and increasing PG seats” and “Upgradation of existing medical colleges for increasing MBBS seats”.
Officials said the sanctioned funds would be utilised for infrastructure augmentation and expansion of teaching facilities at the medical college.
