In a significant development, Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to relocate the Assam Rifles Battalion from Aizawl City to Zokhawsang. The agreement, signed on October 23, 2024, at Mizoram House in New Delhi, aims to reduce congestion in Aizawl and optimise security operations in the region.
The MoA was signed by the Director General of Assam Rifles and the Commissioner & Secretary of the Government of Mizoram’s General Administration Department (GAD), marking the culmination of discussions spanning several years. The relocation plan is expected to ease urban congestion, address residents’ long-standing concerns, and improve the quality of life in Aizawl.
During a press conference held today at the Chief Minister’s Conference Hall, Chief Minister Lalduhoma emphasized the importance of this development, aligning it with the government’s broader objectives to decongest Aizawl and create space for infrastructure that better serves the city’s growing needs.
“This relocation of the Assam Rifles Battalion will address long-standing concerns of both the residents of Aizawl and the security forces,” stated the Chief Minister. “It’s a step forward in balancing urban planning with security requirements, and I believe it will benefit the people of Mizoram.”
The Chief Minister’s announcement represents a milestone in Mizoram’s urban planning and its collaboration with central security agencies. The planned relocation to Zokhawsang, a strategically located area outside Aizawl, is expected to streamline security operations while alleviating pressure on the city’s infrastructure, marking a new phase in urban and security planning for Mizoram.
