Aizawl: Mizoram authorities have seized drugs worth over Rs 1,797.2 crore between January and August 2024, registering 640 cases and arresting 870 individuals. These figures were highlighted during the 8th State-Level NCORD (Narcotics Coordination) meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary Dr. Renu Sharma at the SAD Conference Hall, MINECO.
Chief Secretary Dr. Renu Sharma commended law enforcement agencies for their efforts and stressed the need for continued vigilance in the fight against drugs. She urged District Commissioners (DCs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs) to convene regular NCORD meetings at the district level for better coordination and sharing of crucial information to tackle the drug menace effectively.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Lalbiakthanga Khiangte, head of the Anti-Narcotics Task Force, revealed the extensive seizures and arrests made this year. He also emphasized the ongoing cooperation between various agencies, including the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Mizoram Police, Excise and Narcotics Department, and Assam Rifles, in combating the drug trade.
During the meeting, Director General of Police (DGP) Anil Shukla stressed the importance of joint interrogations in drug-related cases and called for a more integrated approach in tackling not just drugs but also issues like tobacco and alcohol abuse. He reiterated the need for establishing an NCB office in Mizoram to strengthen drug enforcement operations.
The meeting, attended by senior government officials, law enforcement agencies, and district representatives, reinforced the state’s commitment to a coordinated, multi-agency approach in curbing drug-related crimes and ensuring public safety.
