Aizawl: Mizoram Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu has called for stronger enforcement against the practice of animal slaughter in open areas outside designated slaughterhouses, emphasising the need for hygienic food practices and disease prevention.
This appeal comes as the Governor paid an early morning visit to the Modern Slaughter House at Mualpui, operated by the Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department on Tuesday.
During his inspection, Governor Reddy interacted with officials overseeing the slaughterhouse operations and examined the procedures followed to ensure the safety and quality of meat production. He reiterated the necessity of meticulous food inspections prior to consumption to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, particularly those originating from improper meat handling.
In his discussions with officials, the Governor stressed the importance of conducting thorough ante-mortem and post-mortem inspections, as well as proper processing within the designated slaughterhouse facility. He urged officials to check the practice of animal slaughter that takes place outside the designated place. In Mizoram, roadside animal slaughter is common and often takes place during weekends when the demand for pork and beef in Mizoram spikes. “Ensuring that all animals are processed in a controlled environment is crucial to maintaining public health,” he stated.
The Governor also highlighted the need to fully utilize the infrastructure available at the Modern Slaughter House, ensuring that the facility functions efficiently. “The facilities here are in place to meet the region’s demand for properly inspected meat. It is vital that the Modern Slaughter House is used to its full potential,” Governor Reddy added.
The Governor was received at the facility by Dr. Vanlalhruaia, Joint Director (LD&B), Dr. Neihthangpuii, Deputy Director (VPH), and Dr. Michael V. Lalrinzuala, Veterinary Officer (VPH), who provided insights into the daily operations and features of the slaughterhouse.
