Aizawl: MBBS students from Mizoram gathered for a candlelight vigil in Aizawl to protest the recent rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The vigil aimed to express solidarity with the victim and demand justice for the heinous crime.
The Supreme Court of India has taken suo motu cognisance of the case, with a hearing scheduled for August 20. The apex court’s bench, comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, will address the matter titled ‘In Re: Alleged rape and murder incident of a trainee doctor in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata and related issue,’ as per the cause list on the Supreme Court website.
The tragic incident, which occurred on August 9, has ignited nationwide outrage. The body of the postgraduate trainee, found with severe injury marks inside a seminar hall of the hospital’s chest department, led to the arrest of a civic volunteer by Kolkata police the following day. The brutal crime has sparked widespread protests across the country, highlighting the urgent need for stricter measures to protect medical professionals and ensure justice.
In Aizawl, students, interns, and faculty from Zoram Medical College participated in the vigil, holding banners that read, “Justice for Victims, Stop Violence Against Doctors.”
