Aizawl: In a recent interaction with the media, Mizoram’s Chief Minister Lalduhoma addressed concerns regarding the closure of the Indo-Myanmar border on the Mizoram side, reassuring that there are no plans to seal it.
The Chief Minister’s statement comes amidst confusion surrounding the closure of the border by Assam Rifles.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma clarified that there has been no directive from the Ministry of Home Affairs to seal the border. He expressed dissatisfaction with the decision taken by Assam Rifles to close the border ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, citing that they claimed to be acting on orders from higher authorities, bypassing the state government.
He disclosed that upon learning of the border closure, he immediately instructed the Chief Secretary to investigate the matter and ascertain the reasons behind the decision.
Subsequently, the Chief Secretary contacted the Union Home Secretary to seek clarification. In response, the Union Home Secretary stated that no such orders had been issued to close the border and directed Assam Rifles to reopen it immediately.
The initial announcement of the border closure had sparked concern and apprehension among local authorities and residents alike.

It was disclosed that the decision had been made following a meeting between Assam Rifles officials and local authorities from various border areas, along with representatives from the Young Mizo Association (YMA) subheadquarters and village councils.
According to Assam Rifles officials, the directive to close the border had purportedly originated from orders issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Initially implemented during the Lok Sabha polls, the closure was met with opposition and raised questions about its necessity and implications for cross-border movement.
