Aizawl: After weeks of intense scrutiny and allegations, Mizoram’s political landscape finally finds respite as the controversy surrounding the purported use of correcting fluid in exam papers by the Mizoram Public Service Commission (MPSC) comes to a close.
The saga began on March 27, 2024, when the Mizoram apex student body, Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), raised concerns about the integrity of the MPSC, alleging that correcting fluid had been employed to manipulate students’ marks in examination papers.
On April 3, MZP called for the resignation of the MPSC chairman, citing concerns over the commission’s integrity. In response, the MPSC asserted its commitment to its responsibilities under the Indian Constitution, highlighting the rigorous examination process it employs, which involves multiple levels of evaluation and the involvement of numerous experts.
The MPSC elucidated the rigorous evaluation process, involving three levels of scrutiny, undertaken during the MCS (combined) 2023 examinations. A detailed account highlighted the collaboration of 213 experts across various roles, ensuring a meticulous assessment of examination papers.
Despite the MPSC’s explanations, Mizo Zirlai remained steadfast in its demand for the chairman’s resignation, presenting purported evidence of correcting fluid usage in exam papers on April 10. Allegations of concealment and restricted access to examination materials further fueled the controversy.
However, the clouds of uncertainty dissipated on Friday, as Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced the resolution of the matter. M. Lalmuanzuala IAS (retd), appointed by the government to conduct an impartial investigation, concluded that no foul play was involved in the examination process.
