Aizawl: Arecanut growers in Zamuang, a village in Mamit district, Mizoram, have voiced their apprehension regarding the sale of their produce, highlighting the vital role of areca nuts in sustaining their livelihoods.
C Lalramchanna, Secretary of the Zamuang Arecanut Grower’s Co-operative Society Ltd, emphasised the significance of areca nuts as the primary source of income for many families who have transitioned away from traditional jhumming practices.
According to Lalramchanna, approximately 300 families in Zamuang rely solely on areca nut cultivation for their livelihoods. This year, 50 families are set to recommence farming activities, he said. In 2023, the Zamuang Arecanut Grower’s Co-Operative Society Ltd (ZAGCOS) recorded an income of Rs 6,75,40,000.

However, concerns have been raised regarding the sale of their produce to middlemen, known as mahajons, who transport the areca nuts to Assam for profit.
Lalramchanna highlighted that recent disturbances in Assam have resulted in challenges for the growers, leading to inadequate profits. He appealed to the government to facilitate a stable market for their produce in 2024 and ensure the removal of any obstacles hindering transportation.
