Aizawl: In a proud moment for Mizoram and the Indian sports fraternity, Jeremy Lalrinnunga, the acclaimed weightlifter, and a Subedar in the Indian Army, was honored with the prestigious Vishisht Seva Medal on Thursday. Lt Gen AK Singh presented the award to Lalrinnunga at a Southern Command Investiture Ceremony held at Bipin Rawat Auditorium in Pune.
The investiture ceremony marked a historic occasion as Jeremy Lalrinnunga became the first Mizo sportsman to be bestowed with the Vishisht Seva Medal, an acknowledgment of his outstanding contributions to the field of weightlifting.
Renowned as an International Weightlifter, Jeremy Lalrinnunga has left an indelible mark on the global stage. His achievements include clinching the gold medal at the Youth Olympic Games in 2018, and subsequently, securing gold at the Commonwealth Games in 2022 and the Commonwealth Championship in 2021. Notably, he made history as the first Indian to claim a gold medal at the Youth Olympic Games.
Jeremy Lalrinnunga’s journey began in 2011 when he commenced his training at the Weightlifting Academy States Sports Coaching Centre in Ainawn, Aizawl. In 2012, he transitioned to the Army Sports Institute, and later, he joined the Boys Sports Company at ASI in Pune, where he underwent specialized training in weightlifting.

The Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) is a military decoration awarded by the President of India to recognise distinguished service of an exceptional order to all ranks of the armed forces. The medal was established in 1960 and is presented for exceptional service during peacetime as well as in operational conditions.
