Mizoram: Fire erupts in refugee camp

Aizawl: In a tragic incident late Wednesday night, a fire broke out in a refugee camp located in Sihhmui, a village in the Aizawl district. The incident occurred around 6 PM, causing panic among the residents, but fortunately, there were no serious injuries reported.

A gas leak has been identified as the cause behind the fire that erupted in Sihhmui, leading to the gutting of eight houses. In a desperate bid to contain the flames and prevent further devastation, one additional house was deliberately demolished.

The affected families have been identified as Khawtaia, Pathanga, Hanchang, Laithanga, Pachanga, Bawisanga, Thangkima, and Pabiaka.

Out of the eight houses that were tragically gutted in the recent fire incident, belongings had been successfully salvaged from three houses, offering a small silver lining amidst the devastation. However, the families residing in the remaining five houses lost all their belongings to the flames.

In a heartening display of unity, community leaders swiftly made arrangements for the affected families to find temporary shelter. On Thursday, volunteers from the Sihhmui Young Mizo Association came together to initiate the process of repairing and rebuilding the damaged houses.

Additionally, a fundraising initiative was launched by the community to provide financial assistance to the families who lost their homes and belongings. Contributions poured in from both within the village and neighboring areas, reflecting the empathy and solidarity of the community during this challenging time.

Mizoram’s apex student body, Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) General Headquarters in Aizawl, has stepped forward to provide relief to the affected families. The MZP extended financial aid by handing out Rs. 5,000 each to the families through the local branch of the Young Mizo Association (YMA).
