Aizawl: In the ongoing session of the 9th Mizoram Legislative Assembly, Rasik Mohan Chakma, an MLA from Tuichawng constituency, expressed disappointment over the Governor’s recent speech, citing the absence of assurances for the protection of minority cultures and traditions in Mizoram.
Chakma emphasised that, despite the Governor’s mention of initiatives to preserve Mizo identity, the concerns of the minority communities, including the Chakmas, were noticeably absent.
Chakma stated, “The Governor mentioned that the new government will take initiatives to preserve Mizo identity. However, as everyone knows, I am a Chakma, and in Mizoram, we have a minority culture and tradition. We were hoping that there would be words of assurance for the protection of minority culture and tradition, but we did not see anything of that sort, and it gives us a doubtful feeling.”
Chakma further mentioned concerns related to direct funding for district councils. He commented, “We also know that the government had assured direct funding for district councils, but we did not see it in the Governor’s speech.”
In his inaugural address on Monday, the governor mentioned the promotion of Mizo identity, saying, “The Government is committed to preserve and promote Mizo identity, tradition and values. This Government will endeavour to work for the unity and brotherhood of all Mizo people living within India and across the globe within our constitutional framework.”
While acknowledging positive aspects of the Governor’s speech, Chakma urged the government to translate words into actions, emphasizing the importance of political will for successful implementation.

Chakma also addressed economic concerns, pointing out the need to move away from a contract-based economy. He suggested encouraging investments within the state to generate employment opportunities, fostering self-sufficiency and sustainable growth.
