AIZAWL: Chief Minister Zoramthanga on Monday opened a 12-day statewide ‘Fire Prevention Week’ in Aizawl. The event is observed every year since 2000 to create awareness about the importance of fire prevention.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister urged people to be as far meticulous as possible to prevent fire incidents as it causes enormous hardship to many. He said that the southern part of the state was ravaged by wildfire last year, which caused immense loss. 

“Many fire incidents could be prevented. Our state will progress in manifolds if we give importance to fire prevention,” the chief minister said.

According to the Forest Survey of India, forest fire incidents were spotted in at least 12,726 places in Mizoram since January last year. 

Between November 2020 and May 2021, forest fire was spotted in 4,486 places in the state, which covered 14,153 hectares of land, it said.
