Shillong: Two individuals were arrested on Friday for allegedly running over Additional SP (Traffic) Lovish Garg while attempting to evade a special traffic naka. The two were sent to 14 days’ judicial custody after being produced before a court on Friday evening.
SP (Traffic) Hari Prasanth said the Additional SP sustained multiple injuries in the incident, including two lacerations to the head and injuries around the hip region.
Garg is currently stable and his condition is being monitored.
According to Prasanth, the incident occurred at around 1.30 am when traffic personnel were conducting a special naka. The two individuals arrived together in a vehicle and allegedly attempted to flee when Garg tried to stop them.
The vehicle was subsequently intercepted and the two individuals arrested. The vehicle has also been seized as part of the investigation.
Police have registered a case under charges including attempt to murder, disobedience of an order by a civil servant and causing grievous injuries to a civil servant. The investigation is continuing into the circumstances surrounding the incident and the reasons the two individuals allegedly attempted to evade the naka.
Prasanth said the arrested individuals were subjected to medical examination, which indicated that they were drunk.
Police are questioning them to establish the circumstances leading up to the incident and why they attempted to avoid the traffic checkpoint.
He said the investigation would proceed on the basis of material evidence and statements collected by the police, adding that interrogation of the accused was still underway.
The SP (Traffic) said the traffic department has trained personnel to conduct naka operations and deal with situations in which motorists attempt to evade traffic personnel. He said appropriate procedures are followed when vehicles try to flee from traffic checkpoints.
Meanwhile, the condition of Additional SP (Traffic) Lovish Garg is being closely monitored. Prasanth said Garg remains stable despite the injuries sustained in the incident.
Family members of the two accused have claimed that the two were falsely accused. When asked to speak on camera, however, they declined to go on record.
