Tura: Following the recent arrest of eight Bangladeshi nationals in South West Garo Hills (SWGH), West Garo Hills (WGH) police apprehended another four men from Bangladesh while they were travelling in a public vehicle from Tura to Paikan in Goalpara, Assam.

The arrests were made at Jengjal, approximately 30 km from Tura.

The heightened security comes in the wake of the ouster of Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, which has led to increased surveillance along the India-Bangladesh border.

Intelligence reports indicate attempts by Bangladeshi nationals to infiltrate into India. Despite most of the border being secured by fencing, rivers and other isolated areas continue to be exploited for illegal crossings.

In the past week, eight Bangladeshi nationals were arrested after being found in possession of fake identification documents. They were later remanded to six days of police custody.

In yesterday’s incident, the four individuals were arrested during routine checks conducted by police near Jengjal Police Station. Suspicion arose when the men were unable to provide valid identification documents during questioning. Upon further interrogation, they confessed to being residents of Bangladesh and revealed that they were en route to Assam, intending to travel to Kolkata, Chennai, and Guwahati for masonry work. Indian and Bangladeshi currency were also recovered from them.

The arrested individuals were identified as Md Bilal Ali (18), Md Imani Ali (21), Md Ibrahim Ali (28), and Md Nasirul Islam. They have been charged under Section 14 of the Foreigner’s Act.

Further investigation is ongoing.
