Ampati: Acting swiftly on inputs from the Border Security Force (BSF), the South West Garo Hills (SWGH) police arrested 10 Bangladeshi nationals for illegally entering India near Zikzak in Meghalaya.
The arrest took place on Friday afternoon when the SWGH police, stationed at a specially set-up checkpoint, intercepted a tempo carrying the illegal entrants. The 10 individuals were arrested under Section 14 of the Foreigners Act.
According to police sources, information was received from the 50 and 100 Battalion BSF about the movement of 10 Bangladeshi nationals, who were spotted heading from the Purakhasia area towards Zikzak.
The BSF had initially set up a mobile check post at Purakhasia but later learned that the group had already crossed into Indian territory. The information was then relayed to Zikzak Police Station, leading to the successful arrest of the foreigners.
What caught the attention of authorities was the discovery of fake Aadhar cards on all 10 arrested individuals, indicating their possible intention to remain in India.
“We checked the information on the database and found these were all fake IDs. We are not aware of the reason for them coming over and are investigating the matter. They have been remanded to 6 days of police custody,” informed superintendent of police, SWGH, Vikas Yadav.
