Shillong: East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) Sylvester Nongtnger announced on Tuesday that the two accused in the Malki rape case have been arrested. One of the accused was reportedly a friend of the victim.
According to SP Nongtnger, the incident occurred on August 29, and the police received the FIR on August 30. “The OC and the team immediately took action, arresting one of the accused on the same day.
Following interrogation, the second accused was apprehended in Smit. The second accused, a friend of the victim, allegedly committed the crime at his house when no one else was present,” said the SP.
The two accused have been identified as Kitbok Reuben Mawthoh and Andy Malngiang.
SP Nongtnger also noted that, by law, the police have a two-month mandate to file a chargesheet, but expressed confidence that the case would be completed sooner.
The SP added that the department regularly conducts awareness meetings with local leaders, focusing on issues such as drug abuse, women’s health, and crimes against women, including those covered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

When asked about the online trolling of rape victims, SP Nongtnger condemned the act and urged citizens to report crimes against women and children. He assured the public that the police would take prompt action to apprehend culprits, emphasizing that such crimes would not be tolerated.
